HSC Physics Practice Exam – Practice Test & Study Guide for NSW 2026

In the context of motors and generators, the armature is a crucial component typically found in the rotor. The rotor is the rotating part of the machine that works in conjunction with the stator, which remains stationary.

In both DC motors and generators, the armature consists of coils of wire wound around a core, where electrical energy is converted to mechanical energy or vice versa. The armature is responsible for carrying the current, which interacts with the magnetic field generated by the field coil (in cases of electromagnetic machines) or permanent magnets. This interaction generates a torque that causes the rotor to turn.

The armature is essential for the operation as it influences the output characteristics of the device, such as voltage in generators or speed and torque in motors. Understanding the function and placement of the armature provides insights into how electric machines operate and how they transform energy from one form to another.
